Celebrating the Harvest of Learning: Sama-Bajau Learners’ Recognition Day
The past school year has been a journey of growth and achievement for the Sama-Bajau children, made possible through the collective efforts of Cartwheel’s sponsors, partners, and community. Working hand in hand not only helps the children grow and thrive but also empowers them to embrace new experiences with confidence and hope.
The generous support Cartwheel received made a significant impact on the Sama-Bajau children for the School Year 2023-2024, leading to new milestones in their education journey. The children of the Angiskul Ma Bangka (AMB) Child Development Center in Zamboanga City and the Sama-Bajau Activity Center in Parañaque City reaped the fruits of their hard work during their Recognition Days, marking their completion of the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Program.
Zamboanga
On May 23, 2024, 42 Sama-Bajau learners were honored for completing the ECD program. The Recognition Day took place at the AMB in Barangay Kasanyangan, Zamboanga City. The event was graced by their teachers, family members, and partners, including representatives from Ateneo de Zamboanga Center for Community Extension Services (AdZU-CCES), the Office of the City Social Welfare and Development (OCSWD), and the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Brgy. Kasanyangan.
Parañaque
In Parañaque, the celebration of Recognition Day was held on July 6, 2024 at the Palanyag Gym in Brgy. San Dionisio. Twelve learners completed the program, with five of them moving up to Kindergarten at a DepEd school. The event saw participation from teachers, family members, and partners, including representatives from Sun Life Foundation, Thrive, Cartwheel Board of Trustees, and the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Barangay San Dionisio.
The awards the children received were particularly meaningful to them, as they celebrated and validated their unique strengths in attitude and skills. Both events also included heartfelt performances by the Sama-Bajau learners and uplifting messages from community leaders and partners, celebrating the learners’ successes and reaffirming their commitment to support the program.
Access to education remains a significant challenge for many indigenous children, so every child that moves up is a significant step towards bridging the educational gap. Cartwheel is grateful for everyone’s involvement and continued support in providing culturally relevant education for young Indigenous Peoples (IP) learners!
May the harvest of good learning continue for every IP learner in the years ahead!
